Although there is a common thread in the thought process and techniques of design while pursuing a career in the field of design, if you want to master it, you need to have in-depth knowledge and experience in that field. At present, more than 35 types of design training are offered by various design institutes in India.

In the previous articles, we learned about what design is, what skills are required to become a designer, and the education system in design education institutions. In this article let us discuss the various branches of design and their proximity to daily life.

A story of two friends designing…

Both Meera and Amogha are friends. From childhood. from the same school. Exams are over and now vacations have started. Both of them decided to spend “one day” in great fun and to their heart’s content. Want to chill. All the plans are made – where, when, how etc. decided That day means – just eating, drinking, wandering, a movie, a little shopping, friends and fun!

From morning both of them started running in their respective houses. Which dress to wear today – western jeans and top or traditional, which ear rings, how should the make-up be, shoes or sandals, goggles or not? Then how to select them on various criteria. Does it fit the personality etc.?

After preparing himself, Amoghani sent a WhatsApp message to Meera from his mobile phone and sent the location. Meera booked a cab there using Uber’s application. Both reached the main entrance of the “Central Mall” at the appointed time, and the commotion began.

Both of them went to many shops and did some “window” shopping for dresses first, electronics first. Different brands of clothes, furniture, goods, mobiles… there was so much variety. As soon as two o’clock in the afternoon came, the crows in the stomach started to cry. Both had planned to eat out at a theme restaurant. Amogha had already booked a table for both of them at the “Golden Sand” restaurant through her mobile application. When they entered, their mood changed.

Fatigue ran away. The interior design of the restaurant was like an under-water experience. The furniture, lighting scheme, music, decorations all matched the theme. The menu cards, crockery (dishes, glasses, pots), cutlery (spoons, forks, knives) were all in perfect balance with the theme. They came out with a “seafood” taste.

Now the 4th show of the movie. After going to the mini theater in the “Central Mall” both of them rushed to watch the movie “Animation” which was released in the same week. “It’s been a long time since I saw such a beautiful animation?” Meera said. On it, Amogha described its plot, characters, sound and story line.

It’s 7 o’clock and we have to leave. But she didn’t forget to take a “selfie” of the two of them before leaving, as they wanted to update their friends on Instagram about how the day went.

Let us now look at this “thing of two friends” from a different point of view. Like a movie “flash-back”. So his entire day was a journey of different experiences and emotions. Let us understand how many branches of design both of them touched in this single day.

E.g. Self-preparation done before meeting together, walking around the mall, looking and shopping, using mobile, experience in restaurant, movie watched in mall…

By now we must have realized that design and its various branches are an integral part of our daily life (Fig. 1). Although there is a common thread in the thought process and techniques of design while pursuing a career in all these branches, if one wants to master it, one needs to have deep knowledge and experience in that field. At present, more than 35 types of design training are offered by various design institutes in India.
