FAQs
What are the career options in Creative Design after Engineering?
There are various Creative Design Career options after engineering.
1. Most popular option to make career in CREATIVE DESIGN after engineering is doing “Masters in Design”. There are 30+ design schools offering PG programs with 50+ specializations in Design under their Master’s Program. E.g. M. Des in Transportation Design, New Media Design, Interaction Design, Design Led Innovation etc. The premier institutes in India are IDC school of Design, IIT Bombay, NID (Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Gandhinagar) IIT (Guwahati, Delhi, Hyderabad), Srishti Institute of Design Bengaluru, MIT institute of Design Pune etc
2. There is another option, which is doing MBA in creative/ innovation centred programs e.g. MBA in Design Management or Design Led Innovation, Design Thinking. These are 1- or 2-year full time courses offered by IIM, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management and Welingkar Institute of Management
3. Third is doing “Masters in Design” in foreign universities. You may find a lot of information on internet about foreign universities in US, UK, Canada and EU (Germany, UK, France, Italy, Netherlands, Finland etc). For doing MS in Design, you need to have a strong portfolio/ work experience, recommendation and Statement of Purpose since there is no separate entrance examination.
How to prepare for M.Des in NID/IIT after Engineering?
There are two approaches.
Approach 1: Self-exploration and practice –
You may do the following activities to best prepare for entering the Design school
Visit the websites of top 5-6 Design Schools especially sections where academics, pedagogy and students’ works are displayed www.nid.edu; www.idc.iit.ac.in
Visit 1 or 2 design schools nearby to your city. Spend at least half a day and interact with students, see the activities and projects they are doing, try and interact the faculty members, just a visit to a design school will motivate you a lot.
Check out if there are any designers/ architects/ artists are having offices nearby. Fix the appointments with them and visit their places with a well-defined agenda.
Practice some skill enhancement activities e.g. rapid sketching, doodling, soft prototyping exercises, storytelling/ writing, colouring, imagination, visualization, observation etc.
If interested, read and refer a few books on fundamentals of Design, Colour Theory, Elements and Principles of Design. You may find these books online
A few recommended books – “Creative Confidence” by Tom and David Kelly, “The Design Way”, Harold Nelson and Erik Stolterman, “Thinkertoys: A Handbook of Creative Thinking Techniques”, “Value Proposition Design”.
Approach 2: Joining a Mentoring Institute (not a typical class)
Enroll to the Institute who has got the best-in-class faculty having top-notch credentials, background from NID, IDC, IIT etc.
The pedagogy is “Student Centric” and where the students are encouraged to have the peer learning and experiential learning.
Talk with the faculty, study the modules they cover, group and individual activities they conduct, past record and success ratio,
It is advisable to talk with students/ parents of these institutes before joining.
Is it essential to be good at sketching, colouring? Drawing? I have not appeared for the elementary/ intermediate Drawing exams...
The sketching and drawing skills help demonstrate a person’s visualization skills.
It is understood that many students may not have had drawing skills training in their 10+2 schooling, but it is not show stopper. Design focuses more on “Thought Process Development”
I am in Engineering passout student. If I don’t crack NID & CEED what are the other options to get a M.Des degree or how to start a career in Creative Design?
Mention about Private Colleges e.g. MIT, Srishti, SID. They also offer similar courses as that of NID and IIT.
There is another option, which is doing MBA in creative/ innovation centred programs e.g. MBA in Design Management or Design Led Innovation, Design Thinking. These are 1- or 2-year courses offered by IIM, Symbiosis and Welingkar Institute of Management.
Third is doing “Masters in Design” in foreign universities. You may find a lot of information on internet about foreign universities in US, UK, Canada and EU (Germany, UK, France, Italy, Netherlands, Finland etc).
How to crack NID & CEED examination after Engineering?
There is no SINGLE MANTRA to crack any design exam, however you can face the exams confidently. It is not a difficult exam (for the candidates having right aptitude) but it is a different exam!
At the same time there is no defined syllabus and exam pattern to this exam, since it is based on innate abilities of an individual.

I am confused about specialization to choose for M.Des. I am a Mechanical Engineer shall I go for Product Design or Transportation Design?
Design is an interdisciplinary field. It is a combination of various branches in Engineering and Technology, Sociology, Psychology, Behavioural Studies, Humanities etc. You may choose any specialization based on your aptitude and passion after Mechanical Engineering.
It is a myth that Mechanical Engineers are suitable for Product Design or Transportation Design. As a matter of fact, one may treat this as an opportunity to rekindle the true passion. Design Schools provide equal opportunity and weightage to all the branches of engineering while selecting the candidates.
Which Specialization in M.Des has more scope or career opportunities?
Design is a relatively new and emerging field in India and in the world. Every year many design schools are coming up with new specializations to meet the Global industry demands. E.g. New Media Design, Service Experience Design, Strategic Design Management, Design Led Innovation, Business Services and Systems Design, Creative Education etc.
With the advent of emerging technology driven companies flourishing in Indian and Global market, the new start-up and IT enabled companies are recruiting designers having combination of the strong creative and analytical abilities. E.g. a designer having good hands-on skills (e.g. front-end design software, visualization and idea representation techniques) and Unique thought process to develop business viable ideas.
However, the specializations in demand as on today are UX, New Media, Service Design, Product Design, Communication Design, Strategic Design Management
How should I prepare for my portfolio? I am applying for Universal Design @ NID
Portfolio is required at the stage II (DAT MAINS) of NID exam. The stage II is conducted at the institute premises. Portfolio essentially should contain the original work in the form of doodles, ideas, sketches, projects, case studies, models. The portfolio should reflect your personality, skills, thoughts and passion.
For a PG level portfolio, any relevant project corelated to the specialization should add the value. E.g. Universal Design, you may take any real-life problem related to specially-abled people e.g. designing a cutlery for arthritis or developing games for people having dementia etc.
What do various Design & Architecture CETs/ Aptitude Tests consist of?
