FAQs

What are the Creativity Oriented Career Opportunities (after XII, XII+3, XII+4)?

There are multiple types of courses:

  • Graduate Courses
  • Post Graduate Courses
  • Certificate Courses
  • Diploma Courses
Design, Architecture, Fashion, Applied Art, Commercial Art, Photography, Digital Design, Animation, Film production, creative writing, and interior design. You may find more details on the internet

Should I select a career in Design or in Architecture or in Fashion?

The creative foundation of all the three specialization is similar.

They all need similar aptitude and skills, but application of the knowledge is different e.g. Architecture is for buildings, monuments, spaces etc. Fashion is mainly on clothes, life style.

  • One should get exposure to all the 3-4 core branches and be ready to appear for all the entrance exams…
  • Design is a new-age specialization has got enormous scope in coming days.

Is it essential to be good at sketching, colouring? Drawing? I have not appeared for the elementary/ intermediate Drawing exams...

The sketching and drawing skills help demonstrate a person’s visualization skills.

It is understood that many students may not have had drawing skills training in their 10+2 schooling, but it is not a show stopper. The design focuses more on “Thought Process Development”

E.g. UCEED (IIT Design Aptitude Exam) is an entirely computer-based multiple-choice test. You are not required to sketch or draw during the exam.

What academic stream should I choose after 10th grade (science/Commerce/ Arts) if I want to pursue Design?

  • Design is an interdisciplinary activity.
  • Holistic Design focuses on science, arts, commerce, technology, economics, media, policy, society and culture.
  • Successful designers have backgrounds in the arts, science, technology and the humanities
  • But, considering the focus of NATA, U-CEED, NIFT and NID entrance exam, it is recommended to take science and mathematics.
  • Design is not sketching, but blend of art, science and technology!

I heard that it is very difficult to get through top design/ architecture school? How to prepare for it?

This is a myth. It is not a difficult exam (for the candidates having the right aptitude) but it is a different exam!

At the same time, there is no defined syllabus and exam pattern for this exam, since it is based on the innate abilities of an individual.

Appropriate guidance, mentoring and methodical approach will help in facing the exam confidently to his/ her best potential. Experts can provide you with more details on this…

What steps are involved in the candidate selection process at Design Schools?

Generally, it is a 5-step process

  • Commit Yourself that you want to do Design and stick to that commitment (Design requires PASSION!)
  • Start preparing for Design Aptitude test
  • Appear for National Level Design Aptitude Test (various centres in India) and clear it.
  • Studio Test
  • Portfolio presentation and personal interview

Should I pursue career in Design after XII or after graduation?

There is no right or wrong approach here. It depends on the individual.

  • Pursuing career in design after 12th helps many students, since they are not molded in engineering pattern. It is observed that students of 12th grade are more open to new ideas and have fresh thinking. AT the same time, they lack engineering and technology related aspect in the beginning.
  • 4 years of UG Design Education helps build solid expertise than 2 years of PG.

How can I get to know my interest in any specific field of Design E.g. Product, Animation, Graphics etc.?

There is no single test which tells about your inclination about a particular specialization. Especially after 10th it is difficult to judge!

Design schools also don’t expect you to know it. In fact, they expect you to spend ONE year for foundation, so you are exposed to various specializations…

After one year, based on your inclination and assessment by faculty it will be decided.

What abilities (qualities) are required for a student to join Design & Architecture fields?

• Figurative Memory
• Spatial Ability
• Social Ability
• Cognitive Ability
• Artistic Orientation
• Representation skills (Sketching, doodling, drawing)
• Knowledge Orientation
• Research centric aptitude
(other essential qualities like passionate, team player, being empathetic etc)

How these qualities in student can be found out by Aptitude Test?

Gurumantra has developed a DQ (Design Quotient) test to assess the preliminary potential of the Student

What do various Design & Architecture CETs/ Aptitude Tests consist of?

• Visualization and spatial ability
• Analytical and logical reasoning ability
• Observation and design sensitivity
• Design thinking and problem solving
• Environmental and social awareness
• Language and Out-of-box thinking

Why is cost of education so high in Design field?

• The students to teacher ratio is very low (20:1) since it is an experiential learning

• The design institutes require state of the art infrastructure and machinery

• Cost of the faculty is also quite high.

What is the average salary package offered to the fresh designer out of Design School? Is there a guarantee of placement?

For graduate designers from top design schools there are variety of opportunities available in various industries like IT, Consumer products, Automotive, Creative Agencies
The starting salary for B. Des students start from 5 L onwards. Yes, Top institutes have a good track record of placing all students. There is huge demand for the best-in-class designers.
